Riding in Region D means exploring some of the most diverse and beautiful country in North America from a perspective that is hard to beat: the open road. Our travels take us throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming, following everything from famous scenic highways to quiet backroads that wind through mountains, forests, river canyons, farmland, coastal communities, and small towns. The destination is important, but sometimes the road that gets you there turns out to be the best part of the trip.

This region offers an incredible variety of landscapes. One day can take you through towering evergreen forests and across a mountain pass, while the next finds you riding beside a river, across high-desert plains, along the shore of a mountain lake, or following the spectacular Pacific coastline of Washington and Oregon. From wide sandy beaches and towering sea stacks to rocky headlands, coastal forests, historic lighthouses, fishing communities, bays, harbors, and dramatic ocean overlooks, the coast offers an entirely different kind of ride. Add in snowcapped mountains, deep valleys, waterfalls, lakes, rivers, dams, reservoirs, volcanic landscapes, rugged canyons, and scenic byways, and there always seems to be another road worth exploring.

But this country is about much more than mountains and scenery. Agriculture has helped shape the region and is another reason to get off the highway. We travel through apple, cherry, pear and peach orchards, vineyards and wineries, wheat fields, hop country, potato farms, berry farms, ranching areas, and local farming communities. Seasonal fruit stands, farmers markets, roadside produce, local restaurants, breweries, festivals, and community events can turn an ordinary ride into something memorable, and give us a chance to meet the people who call these places home.

We also explore the engineering, history, and culture found throughout the region. Massive hydroelectric dams and reservoirs, historic highways, railroad towns, mining communities, ghost towns, museums, lighthouses, national and state parks, monuments, coastal communities, and roadside attractions all have stories worth discovering. Some will be well-known destinations, while others may be places you have driven past for years without realizing what was just a few miles down the road.

Above all, riding in Region D is about the journey. Whether we’re following a legendary scenic byway, riding the Washington or Oregon coast, searching for a great piece of pie in a small town, stopping at an orchard for fresh fruit, crossing a mountain pass, visiting a dam, discovering a hidden lake, watching the waves roll onto a Pacific beach, or simply taking the long way home, we want to share the roads and places that make this region special. If our travels give you an idea for your next ride, or encourage you to turn down a road you’ve never traveled before, then we’ve done exactly what we set out to do.
